The Dead were not a "Jazz" band, technically their improvisational skills were not of the sophistication of the the great "Jazz" artist: , but they play all those different styles, and mix them, breaking boundaries . I am sure some jazz players would look down on their improves., but some of the best, respected them, and liked what they did . Ornette Coleman ,David Murray, Wayne Shorter ( with Garcia and Weir ), all got it . And Branford, as accomplished of a "Jazz" player as any, clearly thought the world of them .
